International Yoga Day

International Day of Yoga

On December 21, 2014, United Nations has resolved to celebrate June 21 each year as International Day of Yoga (http://www.un.org/en/events/yogaday/) by resolution 69/131.

Yoga is an ancient Indian practice for mental, physical and spiritual well being.  The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.

The sole aim of  International Day of Yoga is to raise awareness worldwide of the innumerable advantages of practicing yoga.

Yoga for Peace

The theme for the 2018 celebration, organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, is ‘Yoga for Peace.’
